Put your own mask on first

If you want to be there for your team and your family, you have to protect your own time and energy.

Protecting our own time and energy, is one of the biggest challenges we face as a leader. Protecting it so we can be our capable, calm and compassionate selves, enabling and inspiring those around us, should be a priority every, single, day.

Last week we talked about the importance of finding more opportunities to communicate with your team to support and encourage them in what are for many, stressful and emotionally draining times.

And of course it’s equally important that you have someone who’s there for you too, a mentor, a close friend maybe even a counsellor, who you can turn to if you’re feeling a bit low yourself. Someone who’ll let you offload, vent, maybe even have a damn good cry!

You have to put your own mask on first, to be in a better position to help others.

There’s so much for you to keep on top of at the moment. You may be working from home. You may have people working remotely or on furlough. You may have a business that is struggling to stay afloat, or maybe a business that is flying and you’re struggling to cope. You might also be home schooling – learning your new roles as teacher, head of entertainment, new puppy trainer!

So many balls to juggle. Some of them rubber – no big deal if you drop them, they will bounce. But others are made of glass – drop those and they shatter!

So how do you keep them all in the air?

It’s a juggling act that many people fail to master because they start with the mindset that everyone else must come first; and the belief that to put themselves first, would be selfish. But this mindset quickly leads them to overwhelm, stress and burnout.

Putting yourself first doesn’t mean that you stop supporting and developing your team, and it definitely doesn’t mean that you ignore the needs of your family. What it means is that you develop a personal management system that protects your time, protects your energy, and frees you to get your own work done, while still having time for your team, your family and your life beyond the business.

Do one thing: Schedule in some me time this week – and do something you love!
