For us, as business owners there is so much to do every day, so many things that people tell us we must do, should do, have to do if we want to be successful. And so many distractions – the usual suspects obviously…e mail and social media…but also the numerous offers of programmes to help us get us from A to B faster…to make us more money…to save us more time.
It can lead to a life of chaos, confusion and indecision. It’s a wonder we ever get anything done.
So what can we do to simplify our lives?
Well first, we need to get back in touch with what’s REALLY important to us – the sort of things that would still be important if the world was going to end in 10 years time. Take a big step back, clear our head, and think about what it is that has real meaning for us – our top 4 or 5 True Priorities.
Top of many people’s lists will be their health…their children…their business… but I want you to go deeper than that…and ask what it is specifically about your health, your children, your business that you want for yourself?
Take your health for example – do you want to lose 2 stones in weight or do you want to run a marathon? With your business…it’s not enough to say you want success…what does ‘success’ look like to you – £1m profit per year…a sense of achievement…financial freedom?
Dig really deep to work out what your ideal future looks like with these 4 or 5 True Priorities, and WHY those things are so important to you. The WHY is the real key, so take time to find it.
Once you’re clear, once you’re certain about what you want for yourself and why…your life will become so much simpler. You will build simple plans focused solely on your True Priorities and the attainment of your ideal future. You’ll ditch the rest…the shoulds, musts, have tos, and other people’s priorities…and focus on your own.
You’ll have a simple life of clarity, consistency and calm.
Do you remember the great line from the film Gladiator…’What we do today echoes in eternity’? Well I have my own version…’What we do today echoes in our future’, – our actions today have consequences in the future.
Think about the choices you’re making, keep it simple and focus on your True Priorities…today!
